£23m West Rhyl Green Space Features Tobermore’s Fabulous Fusion

Denbighshire County Council headed the £1.5 million investment in the new West Rhyl Green Space in North Wales which saw the area revitalised with a new urban park and surrounding greenery. This venture formed part of a larger £23 million regeneration of the West Rhyl area. As a method of achieving a modern landscape for the new green space, Brenig Construction sourced Fusion block paving from Tobermore – a fabulous product with a sparkling granite aggregate surface layer that would produce a unique, contemporary look.

The project was designed by Capita Symonds and Brenig Construction was appointed in September 2014 by Denbighshire County Council to carry out the removal of the existing properties and brownfield site to make way for the new urban park.

Adam Jones, Project Manager at Brenig Construction, explained more about their role in undertaking the venture: “The objective was to form a focal point for the regeneration of the West Rhyl area and to turn a neighbourhood which had sadly started to look a little deprived into an area where young families would want to live. We decided to construct the green space before the new housing to ensure that local families had an outdoor space for their children to play and to provide a selling point for the houses.”

The construction took place over a period of 26 weeks and Brenig Construction overcame various issues to successfully complete the project: “The issues encountered mainly related to the fact that the development was on a brownfield site with various live utilities.

“We also used our expertise in value engineering to enable us to offer cost savings to our client which in turn resulted in more money being available to improve some of the surrounding areas.”

Adam commented on the inclusion of hard landscaping products for the project: “Block paving was chosen as it provided the park with a high quality finish. A wide variety of stakeholders were involved in the project and all parties wanted to ensure the park stood out.

“Block paving also offered the opportunity for alternative patterns and designs to be developed, so the architect created a concept where the paving and soft planting would replicate the shape of a fish – an appropriate symbol since Rhyl is a coastal resort.”

Tobermore’s Fusion block paving was perfect for achieving this as the sparkling granite aggregate surface finish was in fitting with sea-themed design and created instant aesthetic appeal on site. Fusion in the colours of Silver, Mid Grey and Graphite was specified to complete the contemporary look envisioned for the project.

Adam continued: “The project is a stand out one for Brenig. It’s somewhere we can take clients and show them the quality of our work and the products we use.”

Carol Evans, Project Manager at Denbighshire County Council, is very hopeful for the future of West Rhyl: “The biggest impact the project will have will be changing people’s perception of West Rhyl. We want to see private sector development come into the area and it’s only through a radical approach that we were ever going to achieve that.”
