The Challenge
The design brief involved the transformation of the Curtis Green Building, situated on the banks of the River Thames in London, into a modern, well equipped and efficient facility.
The brief for the project focused heavily on cost-effective sustainability and on ensuring that the refurbished building would sit comfortably in its environment.
Javier explained: “The development was designed to create a welcoming open face for the organisation. The scheme combined a new public realm, glazed entrance pavilion, an extension to the existing Curtis Green Building and a rooftop addition that offers spectacular views across London. The restrained contemporary architecture, with an emphasis on respectful refurbishment, brought the original building to life through the use of materials, colours and proportions of the local built context and architectural features.”

AHMM worked with Tobermore previously and trusted that Tobermore would have an attractive and functional hard landscaping solution for the scheme.
The architect was not disappointed when Tobermore presented Mayfair Flags, a paving slab with a granite aggregate surface layer that created the modern appearance desired by the client.
In addition to the aesthetic advantages, Mayfair Flags also served functional requirements for AHMM. Javier commented: “We needed to provide approximately 80 kg per sqm. to hold insulation down as there was an inverted roof system in the terraces. A 20mm deep paver was considered early in the process but we knew the light weight of these products was not suitable. We specified Mayfair Flags with a depth of 50mm, although higher depths were available, and this solved the problem.”
"I would absolutely recommend Tobermore products to anyone in the construction industry. I have incorporated Tobermore products into designs in the past and I will certainly do so again in the future."
