Block Paving and Kerbs & Edging

Tobermore played a key role in designing an accessible yet visually stunning exterior for the newly built Springmoor Primary School. By incorporating versatile Artro block paving, Tobermore was able to provide a solution that balanced functionality with aesthetic appeal. The project required paving that would withstand high foot traffic while ensuring safe and easy access for all students, staff, and visitors, including those with mobility challenges.

Springmoor Grange School has opened its doors to pupils after Esh Construction completed the £13 million build on behalf of Durham County Council. With the capacity for more than 320 primary school pupils as well as a 52-place nursery unit, Springmoor school has replaced Ox Close Primary and Ox Close Nursery Schools as demand for school provisions in Spennymoor continue to grow.

Inside the newly fitted out school are 21 teaching classrooms, a nursery, a learning community suite, library, and office spaces, as well as a staff room, toilet facilities, changing rooms, a hall and dining and kitchen facilities.

The Challenge

Create accessible school grounds with a traditional finish

Springmoor Primary School has been built to replace the existing Ox Close Primary and Ox Close Nursery Schools, providing a modern educational facility to meet the increasing demand for school places in the area. A key objective for Durham County Council in this project was to design an entrance and surrounding exterior that would not only be accessible and functional but also visually appealing while complimenting the architecture of the new building.

The council sought a paving solution that would add a traditional, timeless finish to the project while ensuring the product would blend seamlessly with the contemporary aesthetic of the new building through colour selection of the paving product. Maintaining this balance between tradition and modernity was essential, all while staying within budget. This approach ensured that the exterior spaces of the new school would reflect both practicality and style, creating an inviting and cohesive environment for students, staff, and visitors alike.

The Solution

European clay inspired block paving Artro provided a beautiful finish in Springmoor School

The project required paving that would withstand high foot traffic while ensuring safe and easy access for all students, staff, and visitors, including those with mobility challenges. Tobermore’s Artro range was chosen for its durability, smooth finish, and timeless design, which mimics the style of traditional European stonework. Chosen colours Autumn and Steel allowed for a seamless integration with the school’s architecture and landscaping, while its slip-resistant surface ensured that the block paving met essential safety standards.

Tobermore’s Fusion Kerb added a sleek and contemporary feel to paving choice Artro, and provided a durable yet aesthetically appealing finish to the whole area. In Springmoor Primary School, these kerbs serve an essential purpose, including defining pathways, maintaining clear boundaries, and supporting traffic management for both vehicles and pedestrians. Fusion Kerb’s robust construction ensures long-lasting performance, while its modern design integrates seamlessly with the Artro block paving, creating a safe and beautiful school entrance for all its new pupils.
