The Scottish Canals Framework is an extensive regeneration project, that took place along the Forth & Clyde Canal in North Glasgow. Significant physical and mental wellbeing benefits have been achieved from regenerating this urban waterway in one of Europe’s most deprived areas.
Bainsford Lock is a busy pedestrianised walkway located on the Forth and Clyde Canal Falkirk. The public realm area provides scenic routes leading to the popular Falkirk Wheel.
The regenerated public walkways required aesthetically pleasing block paving that could withstand significant footfall. With its contemporary granite aggregate finish and hard-wearing surface, Tobermore’s Fusion in Silver and Mid Grey were the best option for the project.
Forth and Clyde Canal has been transformed into a vibrant and emerging destination that boasts world-class cultural and artistic talent, a cutting-edge urban sports hub, and an array of major development and investment opportunities. As a catalyst for change, this historic canal will continue to drive the future prosperity of the area, from Port Dundas and Possil to Maryhill and beyond.
"Access to outdoor space for recreation and physical activity is essential for our health and wellbeing. Scotland’s canals are a great asset and I welcome this research from Glasgow Caledonian University that suggests that canal regeneration in North Glasgow has been associated with a positive impact on health, health inequalities, and a long-term reduction in mortality rates for communities living nearby.”"
