Tobermore Assist Ogilvie at New Farmhouse Inn Branch in Hamilton

Ogilvie Construction was seeking a practical hard landscaping solution with aesthetic qualities that would complement Red Burn Farm, a new country-themed restaurant/pub in Hamilton. Tobermore presented the contractor with a variety of paving products that were both attractive and functional to meet the client’s needs.

Red Burn Farm is a branch of the UK’s popular Farmhouse Inn restaurant and bar chain. Lauren Kidd, Senior Buyer at Ogilvie Construction explained the objectives of the project: “The client was looking for the best price to build a new restaurant, one of a chain in a very competitive market. The architect was tasked with achieving a traditional country restaurant/pub style while obtaining local authority standards.”

The exterior building and interior of Red Burn Farm was constructed with a charming Victorian aesthetic in keeping with the distinctive Farmhouse Inn branding. Lauren noted that the choice of hard landscaping products was of great importance from a branding perspective as continuity needed to be created between the landscape and the distinct traditional style at Red Burn Farm.

Lauren commented on the decision to employ a paving solution:

“We knew that block paving could provide an aesthetically pleasing hard-wearing finish for the externals/carpark and compliment the style of the building whilst providing an essential SuDS method.”

LAUREN KIDD, SENIOR BUYER AT OGILVIE CONSTRUCTION

Having worked with Tobermore previously, Lauren met with the Scottish Sales team to discuss paving options and she was extremely impressed with what the team had to offer, particularly the product colour options. Lauren explained what the client wanted to achieve from the external works: “The concept design for the landscape was to compliment the new building while enabling the site to sit harmoniously within the larger master plan.”

Tobermore’s Textured Flags in the colour of Buff was selected for the outdoor eating area and Tactile Flags, also in Buff, was combined with Tegula block paving in the rich tones of Heather for the pedestrian route connecting the restaurant to the carpark.

Textured Flags are produced with a granular surface that creates a soft, natural appearance and Tegula is a vintage themed product that is manufactured with an aged, antique look. Lauren noted that Textured Flags and Tegula provided the aesthetics to compliment the rustic brick façades of the building and were the perfect accompaniment to the traditional ambience at Red Burn Farm.

As a sensory paving product, Tactile Flags in a blister finish was vital in indicating the movement between the restaurant and carpark areas. Lauren commented, “We needed to use a combination of blocks to create a hard wearing flush surface that could achieve both the client’s and DDA requirements for user friendly flush access.”

The carpark area was created with Tobermore’s Hydropave Pedesta in the colours of Natural and Brindle, together with Hydropave Ballotini in White, a high visibility paving indicator which was used to distinguish parking spaces.

Lauren explained that they needed to employ a permeable solution on site: “The technical capabilities and environmental benefits of Tobermore’s Hydropave Pedesta and Ballotini was hugely important in providing a SuDS system to protect against potential flooding issues and creating a more sustainable landscape at Red Burn Farm.”

The Farmhouse Inn branch was completed in 2015 and achieved the objectives set out by the client. Lauren reflected on her experience of working with Tobermore: “The products and service provided by Tobermore was simply excellent.

“We have since utilised Tobermore products to assist us in design and build project submissions.”

Established in Sheffield in 2004, the charming Farmhouse Inn chain is continuing to expand across the UK with 20 outlets now up and running.

"The technical capabilities and environmental benefits of Tobermore’s Hydropave Pedesta and Ballotini was hugely important in providing a SuDS system to protect against potential flooding issues and creating a more sustainable landscape at Red Burn Farm."
