Tobermore played a key role in the enhancement of Monkwearmouth Hospital’s hard landscaping. Hydropave Fusion and Hydropave 240 were the perfect permeable product solutions to amplify the visual aesthetic of the external space.
A new, modern, purpose-built facility has been constructed within the existing hospital grounds, featuring a welcoming, level, and accessible front entrance to the main outpatient services. The building also includes meeting rooms, flexible open-plan workspaces, breakout areas, and consultants’ offices on the upper floors, complete with dedicated spaces for their support teams. The hard landscaping around the new building was meticulously designed to ensure level access for patients while creating a visually appealing and inviting entrance for all visitors. The construction of the 3,287 sq. m, three-storey building was completed by Sir Robert McAlpine over 19 months, achieving a Design stage BREEAM Excellent standard.
High end permeable paving was essential to meet SuDS requirements for Monkwearmouth Hospital.
The project required hard landscaping that would provide level access and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the new Monkwearmouth Hospital building. The front of the building features a spacious piazza that needed a permeable solution to help increase the development’s BREEAM rating. It was imperative that the chosen permeable paving added a contemporary, high-end feel to the new building while helping to meet sustainable targets for the development. To elevate the beautiful piazza, soft landscaping, seating and a memorial garden were to be incorporated into the space to honour the history of the site.
Tobermore’s Hydropave block paving provided the ultimate permeable solution, transforming the hospital’s landscape with both functionality and style
Tobermore’s Hydropave block paving was the ideal solution for the hospital project, seamlessly combining practicality with modern design. The hospital required a high-end permeable paving system to comply with Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) regulations, ensuring effective water management while enhancing the overall environment. Tobermore’s Hydropave Fusion and Hydropave 240 were the perfect choices, delivering top-tier performance in both drainage efficiency and aesthetic appeal.
The use of Hydropave Fusion was particularly transformative, featuring natural granite aggregates that not only met the drainage requirements but also elevated the look of the hospital’s exterior spaces. The vibrant colours and sleek, contemporary finish added a sense of sophistication to the hospital grounds, creating a welcoming and visually striking atmosphere. The introduction of Tobermore’s Fusion kerbs provided a clear and visually appealing delineation between the paved walkways and the landscaped areas. These kerbs not only served a practical purpose by creating distinct boundaries, but also enhanced the overall aesthetic of the site.
By balancing cutting-edge functionality with high-end design, Tobermore’s products helped create a space that is as beautiful as it is efficient.
