Block Paving

The Challenge

To provide a natural landscaping solution to complement the The GlaxoSmithKline Centre for Sustainable Chemistry.

The GlaxoSmithKline Centre for Sustainable Chemistry is one of the largest developments to be undertaken by the University of Nottingham in recent years. The 4.500 sq.m. Centre was developed to house a state-of-the-art carbon neutral laboratory which is the first of its kind in the UK.

Fairhursts Design Group (FDG) were appointed to design the unique facility while Morgan Sindall managed the construction works.

The focus on sustainability is reflected in the building itself, which incorporates the latest technologies including solar power and sustainable biomass.

Rick Sharp, Executive Associate at FDG, explained the landscaping design aims of the project, “with sustainability at the core of the building design, it was important that a natural appearance was also achieved in the landscaping.’’

The Solution

Tobermore’s Fusion and Pedesta offered the perfect solution in both eco credentials and aesthetics.

Rick commented on the decision to specify Tobermore Paving:

“The small modular form of the Fusion and Pedesta block paving, together with their natural textured appearance and variation in colour also allowed the pedestrian routes to blend well with the ethos of the project as a whole. At the same time the selection of different colours provided a contrast to break up larger areas and define edges with soft landscaping.”

"Product selection forms a major part of achieving sustainability in construction. As a manufacturer, Tobermore was readily able to provide the required data for the scheme and the team gave us confidence in the product selection and their assistance in specification."
