Clancy Quay is a high-profile residential development situated in Dublin. Made up of 845 units which can house 1,800 residents, Clancy Quay is the largest multifamily community in Ireland. The scheme presents a mix of new-build townhouses, apartments and conversions of historic army barracks, which gives the development a distinctive identity. A wide variety of Tobermore paving products were laid at each construction phase which spanned over a 12-year period. The development won the prestigious RIAI Housing Award in 2018.
A comprehensive range of paving products were required to complement both historic and modern homes on this expansive development.
The primary design consideration for Mitchell + Associates Landscape Architects was to create a coherent development with a subtle difference between the new and listed buildings. To achieve this, the practice sought hard landscaping products that had the same material finishes as used on previous phases of the scheme.
Based on the performance of Tobermore products on the initial phases of Clancy Quay, Mitchell + Associates were confident to specify Tobermore on the final phase also. Other design considerations included a SuDS requirement and excess trafficking on the access road.
Tobermore supplied modern and traditional paving to complement both new and historic homes.
Tobermore’s traditional looking Retro was perfect for rustic footpaths around the listed buildings. Tegula was used for shared surfaces. Modern paving ranges Manhattan, Fusion and Mayfair were ideally suited to the hard landscaping around the new buildings. As SuDS was a major environmental consideration, Tobermore’s Hydropave permeable paving was required for the car parking areas.
Tegula was laid as a rigid paving system due to the volume of traffic expected on the access road into the carpark. Mitchell + Associates wanted to avoid tarmac to keep the same finish throughout. Tegula was laid rigidly to enhance its durability while maintaining a coherent aesthetic.
“12 years on, Tobermore products continue to perform really well while sustaining their colour and finish over the years. In fact, there is very little difference between the paving laid at the different stages of the project. All of the paving appears to have been installed as one phase, which is exactly what we wanted.” Axel Hens – Associate Director at Mitchell + Associates
"From a sustainability point of view, it was important for us to specify products from an Irish manufacturer. It was efficient to deal with a company who could supply a variety of paving blocks, flags and kerbs for the different areas of the development. Tobermore provided us with product samples at design stage and during construction. The design services and advice provided by Tobermore was excellent and helped us in our decision making. We would certainly recommend Tobermore and will use them again in the future."
