BAE Systems has designed a cutting-edge £12 million training facility in Glasgow, positioned to secure a dynamic workforce for Scottish shipbuilding for generations. The 5,500m² Applied Shipbuilding Academy at BAE Systems’ Scotstoun shipyard is designed to develop talent across the board, from new recruits to senior leaders.
The facility consists of two key areas: a Modern Trade Hall and a Flexible Learning Hub. In the Trade Hall, learners experience a high-quality, hands-on training environment that fully immerses them in realistic ship mock-ups, bringing theory to life with practical, real-world scenarios. Adjacent to this is the Flexible Learning Hub which features over 30 dedicated teaching spaces. It also includes a state-of-the-art STEM innovation lab, an engaging exhibition area, and versatile conference facilities, all designed to create a dynamic and interactive learning experience.
Create a striking space with a cost-effective hard landscaping solution
Arch Henderson set out to design a visually striking and functional outdoor space for BAE Systems in Glasgow, balancing modern aesthetics with cost-effective hard landscaping solutions. Their vision was to create a dynamic and engaging environment that would seamlessly integrate with the contemporary architecture of the site.
To achieve this, they sought to incorporate innovative paving patterns that would not only enhance the visual appeal, but also help to define and break up the distinct areas within the space. By carefully selecting materials and layouts, the aim of the design was to introduce a sense of structure and flow while ensuring durability and practicality. The desired result was a well-coordinated, stylish, and efficient outdoor area that would elevate the overall environment and deliver lasting results.
Tobermore Braemar block paving created dynamic space for BAE Systems
For their project at BAE Systems in Glasgow, Arch Henderson turned to Tobermore’s Hard Landscape Proposal service to simplify the decision-making process. By leveraging the expertise of Tobermore’s in-house landscape architects, they received tailored design advice and innovative laying patterns that helped define and enhance the distinct outdoor areas.
BAE Systems’ outdoor space was transformed with cost-effective yet aesthetic hard landscaping. The Hard Landscape Proposal ensured that the paving not only complemented the modern architecture, but also provided a practical, durable solution suited to the high-traffic environment. The result is a well-structured, cohesive space that meets both functional and design objectives. To achieve the end result, Braemar block paving was carefully selected in colours Innis Black, Jura Grey, Alto Silver, and Arran Stone to create contrast and visual interest.
By using a variety of block sizes and innovative laying patterns, the design effectively broke up and defined the distinct areas, adding both visual interest and functional structure to the space. This approach has not only enhanced the modern aesthetic of the site but also provided a durable and practical surface capable of withstanding high foot traffic.
