How to effectively design with radius concrete kerbs

By Sam McBride

Radius concrete kerbs are specially manufactured to form a curve of a certain radius. The key to effective design is to set out the kerbs in a way that will work with radius that can be precisely delivered from manufactured radius concrete curves to pre-selected values. This radius can typically be 1m or 2m for tight curves, or up to 6m or 9m for wider, more gentle arcs.

The size of the radius formed by the curve is measured as detailed in the diagram below.

The radius is always measured to the face of the kerbline, whether the radius is internal or external.

How are external or internal curves formed by concrete kerbs?

Concrete radius kerbs are available that can form either external or internal curves, as illustrated below:

The textured surface always faces the carriageway to ensure that the visual appearance and surface finish match that of the straight concrete kerbs used on either side of the concrete radius kerbs.

Complete your project with kerbs & edging

From defining boundaries and creating clean transitions to complementing paved areas, Tobermore’s range of concrete kerbs and edging provides a durable, practical finish for commercial and residential developments.

Can designers choose to form curves without using radius concrete kerbs?

Yes, designers can decide to create a non-standard curve radius. This is formed by cutting sections of kerb, rather than using pre-manufactured radius concrete kerbs. However, this is a more time-consuming approach. In addition, the visual results will struggle to match those delivered by the smooth, precise arc formed when using radius concrete kerbs and radius concrete edging kerbs.

Where can I get advice when designing using radius concrete kerbs?

Tobermore has extensive experience in supplying radius concrete kerbs as part of our range of kerbs and edging products. Our 2D / 3D Design service is designed to simplify the decision-making process by offering tailored solutions to specific project needs. These include the setting out of kerb designs that use readily available radii from radius concrete kerbs to maximise efficiency and aesthetic appearance.

Sam McBride, Tobermore’s Technical Manager, explains: “Our customers find our 2D / 3D Design service very reassuring. They can rely on us to suggest the most appropriate way to set out the concrete kerbs across a development. We can show how to use off-the-shelf radius concrete kerbs to complement the overall design and make installation straightforward. This removes the need  for unnecessary extra cutting required to form curves with bespoke radii and delivers a premium visual finish to match the quality of the rest of the kerbs and edging on site.”

If you would like more information on the radius concrete kerb and concrete edging kerb options for your project, please contact our technical team, who will be happy to help.
