Tobermore is proud to announce that we have been shortlisted in two award categories at the prestigious Ground Engineering Awards 2026 recognising innovation in geotechnical engineering and infrastructure delivery across the UK.
This annual event brings together industry leaders from across the geotechnical and ground engineering sector to celebrate outstanding achievements across projects, people, and businesses.
This year, Tobermore has been shortlisted as a finalist in two categories:
The Award for Technical Excellence recognises a high-tech advancement or concept that has helped a company improve performance or deliver a particularly challenging element within a project.
Tobermore is delighted that our Secura Grand reinforced soil structure has been recognised as an innovative alternative to traditional reinforced concrete bridge structures. The system combines modular construction with reinforced soil technology, allowing for faster installation, reduced material use, and a smaller environmental footprint compared to conventional solutions.
At Tobermore, we are committed to making hard landscaping easy for our customers and are proud that our Secura Grand retaining wall solution can provide a high-performing, cost-effective and visually appealing solution to complex site challenges.
Secura is a mortarless retaining wall, engineered for simple and efficient on-site construction, reducing the need for wet trades or specialist plant.
This award recognises a ground engineering scheme that stands out in terms of innovation, sustainability, health and safety, and value engineering. Tobermore and our partners, Geoman, Fairhurst and Esh, have been recognised for their work on the Sheepfolds Subway project in this award category.
A new pedestrian bridge across the River Wear formed part of Sunderland’s multi-million-pound regeneration plan for the Sheepfolds area. The bridge was considered a key element of the project, providing an important link between the Sheepfolds area and the former Sheepfolds Industrial Estate, which is now being redeveloped for new housing.
Tobermore played a key role in delivering the ground engineering solution for the scheme through the use of our Secura Grand retaining wall system. The reinforced soil structure was specified to support the bridge approach and surrounding infrastructure, providing a structurally efficient and visually appealing solution within the constrained riverside environment.
Secura Grand offered a practical alternative to traditional reinforced concrete structures, helping to reduce construction time, minimise material use and lower the overall carbon footprint of the project. The modular system also enabled safe and efficient installation on site, while delivering the long-term structural performance required for the bridge infrastructure.
This achievement highlights the value of partnership and collaboration, demonstrating how Tobermore and our project partners Geoman, Fairhurst and Esh combined expertise and innovation to deliver a high-quality, sustainable, and technically challenging solution.
Alex Walther, Head of Retaining Walls at Tobermore, commented:
“Being shortlisted in two categories at the Ground Engineering Awards is a fantastic recognition of the engineering capabilities and value of Tobermore’s retaining wall solutions. We are proud to partner with groundworkers, contractors, engineers, councils, and housebuilders on projects across the UK to deliver innovative, cost-effective, and attractive reinforced soil systems.”
While Tobermore is widely recognised for its paving products, its retaining wall systems are increasingly being used to deliver major infrastructure and ground engineering projects across the UK and Ireland.
Tobermore is dedicated to supporting our customers at every stage of their retaining wall projects. Through our Create & Construct support hub, we provide tools such as Secura FastFind, Secura Create, Retaining Wall Designs, 3D SketchUp, and the Secura Portal, making it easier than ever to plan, design, and deliver high-quality retaining wall solutions.
