Tobermore teamed up with Roger Bisby from Skill Builder to see a new Tobermore patio being laid and talk about best practice on site. Roger visited a job in progress in Co. Antrim with Tobermore Registered Paving Contractor Sperrin Paving.

Skill Builder provides practical advice on material and tools and best practice advice from building industry expert Roger Bisby.

Roger joined on Day 1 of a project in Co. Antrim where the brief was to create an outside area for the whole family to enjoy, which included; a courtyard area, walling, a raised flower bed and a path around the house. The homeowner had used Tobermore’s Landscape Design Service for the project.

The team from Sperrin Paving kicked off the project by creating a raised flower bed area using Tobermore Secura Lite retaining walls. Secura Lite is a mortar-free, dry building product. This means it is incredibly easy to install for DIY enthusiasts and perfect for smaller walling projects at home.

The team then moved on to the courtyard area, for this the homeowner had chosen to use Tobermore Historic paving flags with a Historic circle incorporated. The Historic circle was complemented with Sienna Sandstone Setts to complement the colour of the property.

Historic slabs are easy to lay and complement both traditional and contemporary house types. Historic slabs provide the look and feel of traditional natural stone with the benefit of a modern hard-wearing surface. The property featured a set of double doors which lead out on to the patio area. Tobermore Step Risers were used along with Historic Flags to give the steps that finishing touch.

A resin based material, A Joint, was used to fill the joints between the slabs. Resin based jointing products offer a very convenient way to joint patio slabs. The material is brushed in between joints and will start to harden to create a solid joint as soon as it is brushed in. This type of product prevents weeds from growing up between the flags, providing a low maintenance solution.

Preparing the sub-base for your patio is as important as the materials you choose to lay. In this video Roger spends time chatting to the team at Sperrin Paving about best practice when laying a patio and give hints and tips for any DIY enthusiast preparing to tackle a paving project.
