A decorative garden wall is more than just a boundary; it’s an opportunity to add a stunning feature to your outdoor space. Whether you’re looking to create a cosy corner for a fire pit, design an elegant raised flower bed, or simply define different areas within your outdoor space, garden walling is a versatile solution. It not only offers privacy and structure but also enhances the overall aesthetic by seamlessly blending hard and soft landscaping elements.

If the thought of building a garden wall feels intimidating, you’re not alone. Many DIY enthusiasts worry that it’s a project only seasoned contractors should tackle. But with the right materials and guidance, even a novice can achieve professional results. Enter Garden Stone walling – your perfect partner in turning that garden wall dream into a reality without the need for specialised skills.

What is Garden Stone and why is it an ideal choice for garden walls?

Garden Stone walling is a game-changer for DIYers and garden enthusiasts alike. These tapered blocks come with a decorative finish on both sides, making them perfect for creating eye-catching walls and other curved garden features. Whether you’re aiming for a classic straight wall or a more fluid, organic shape, Garden Stone’s design flexibility has you covered.

What really sets Garden Stone apart is its user-friendly application. The blocks are glued together using a polyurethane adhesive, which means no messy mortar and no need for pointing. This not only speeds up the process but also makes it incredibly straightforward. Even if you’ve never laid a block in your life, Garden Stone ensures that your wall will come together beautifully with minimal effort.

How high can you build your garden wall using Garden Stone?

When it comes to building your garden wall with Garden Stone, there are some guidelines to keep in mind. The wall can reach up to a maximum height of 960mm, providing ample room for most garden projects. Whether you’re creating a low boundary wall or a taller feature, Garden Stone can deliver the look you’re after.

However, it’s important to note that Garden Stone is not designed for retaining walls. If your project requires additional structural support, such as holding back soil on a slope, you’ll want to explore options from our Secura walling range. Secura offers the robust construction needed for retaining walls while still providing an attractive finish.

Step-by-step guide to building your own garden wall with Garden Stone

Building your own garden wall or feature with Garden Stone is a rewarding project that can be accomplished in just a few steps. Here’s how to get started:

Step 1:

Start by preparing a solid foundation. A well-prepared foundation is key to ensuring your wall’s stability. Lay the first course of blocks on a concrete foundation mix, which should be approximately 180mm wide and 50mm deep. This will provide a stable base for your wall and ensure it stands the test of time.

 Step 2:

Begin laying the blocks, making sure to rotate each adjacent block by 180 degrees. This technique helps to achieve a straight, uniform line. If you’re creating a curved wall, you can adjust the rotation of the blocks to follow the curve more naturally, ensuring a smooth, flowing shape.

It is achievable to create a circular feature using Garden Stone, without needing to cut any blocks. This will create a 2.32m diameter circle and will require 28 blocks per course, the blocks should be installed with the short face pointing inwards.

Step 3:

After laying the first course of blocks, it’s time to build upward. Continue adding rows of blocks, securing them together with a polyurethane glue. This glue is strong and weather-resistant, giving you peace of mind that your wall will remain sturdy through all seasons.

 Step 4:

Once your wall has reached the desired height, it’s time to add the finishing touch. Place a coping on top of the wall, which not only caps off the structure but also adds a professional, polished look. Glue the coping into place using the same polyurethane adhesive.

Creating a corner might sound tricky, but with Garden Stone, it’s straightforward. To form a 90-degree corner, start by positioning a corner block at the desired location on the first course. Build outwards from this point on both sides, alternating with standard blocks.

On the second course, simply flip the corner block over before placing it. This alternating flip method on each subsequent course ensures a strong, interlocked corner that is as visually appealing as it is durable. Whether you’re creating a simple boundary or a more complex design, Garden Stone makes it easy to achieve professional-quality corners.

How do I finish the end of my garden wall?

Finishing the end of your garden wall is the final step in ensuring it looks complete and polished. To do this, you’ll need to cut a block to size. You can use either a standard block or a corner block for this task.

Using a corner block will provide a finished end that matches the face of the wall, offering a seamless look. On the other hand, if you prefer a smoother finish, a standard block will give you a sleek, refined end. Either way, the result is a well-defined garden wall that enhances your outdoor space.
