When Katie and her husband decided to transform the front of their home, they wanted more than just a new driveway. They wanted additional parking for family and friends and a brighter, more welcoming entrance.
The finished project has transformed the space, combining a bright, modern look with the country character they wanted.

One of the biggest challenges was the lack of parking.
“We love having friends and family over, so we wanted to avoid guests having to park on the road or worry about where to leave their cars.”
The couple also wanted the new driveway to be practical and low maintenance, while creating an open space their son could safely enjoy when he is a little older.
Bertie Smyth & Son Hard Landscaping designed the driveway to maximise parking while creating an open and balanced layout.
“The brief was to create a driveway that was both practical and visually striking. The clients wanted to maximise the parking available, make it easier when entertaining family and friends, and give the front of the property a complete facelift.”
Katie and her husband wanted a bright, modern finish with a country twist, with quality, durability and low maintenance also important.
“We wanted paving that would stand the test of time, look fantastic for years to come and not require lots of upkeep.”
Bertie recommended Tobermore based on his previous experience using the products.
“I’ve used Tobermore products for many years because I know the quality is there. Their products are reliable, hard-wearing and offer a great choice of colours and finishes.”
Shannon Slate was chosen as the main paving for the driveway, giving the large area a clean, consistent finish while providing the durability needed for everyday vehicle use. A Sienna Silver border was then introduced to add contrast and definition around the paved area.
For the front door steps, Kerbstone Charcoal was used as step risers with Sienna Silver as the tread, tying in with the tones of the driveway while creating a practical transition between areas. At the end of the driveway, Garden Stone Walling in Slate was used to create a feature wall, adding texture and helping bring some of the country character the couple wanted into the overall design.
Before laying began, the existing driveway was excavated, the groundwork completed and the sub-base built up with the correct falls and levels for drainage.
For Katie and her family, the finished driveway is now more than a place to park. It has created a brighter, more spacious area that works better for everyday family life.
“We were absolutely delighted. We couldn’t believe how much brighter, more spacious and welcoming it made everything feel. It was exactly the look we had hoped to achieve.”
The combination of Shannon Slate and the lighter Sienna Silver detailing helps keep the driveway feeling bright and open, while the Kerbstone Charcoal steps and Garden Stone Walling add contrast, structure and character around the space.
With more usable space outside, hosting friends and family is easier, with plenty of room for visitors to park.
“Every time we pull onto the driveway, we’re reminded how worthwhile the project was.”
The transformation has caught the attention of others too, with passers-by regularly stopping to compliment the finished driveway.
