To achieve compliance for use in kerbs, footways and paved areas, concrete kerbs<\/a> must satisfy the\u00a0appropriate British\u00a0Standard (BS) testing requirements. For this reason, they are commonly referred to as \u2018British Standard Kerbs\u2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Historically, the tests needed could be found in the Specification of Highway Works (SHW) document that was part of the Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Concrete kerbs were included in Series NG 1100 of the SHW, and Clause 1101 detailed the appropriate testing requirements. Local Authority construction specifications were based on the SHW and included tables such as the one below.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the test standard BS 7263 was withdrawn in October 2006<\/span>1<\/span>\u00a0and replaced by BS EN 1340:2003<\/span>2<\/span>\u00a0for concrete kerbs with\u00a0additional\u00a0testing criteria.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a further development, National Highways updated the MCHW in September 2025.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The information relating to concrete kerbs is now in \u201cCP 207 Instructions for specifiers for CC 207 Footway, cycle track, paved area,\u00a0kerb\u00a0unit and access step\u00a0construction\u201d<\/span>\u00b3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As this is a recent update, local authorities may refer to\u00a0previous\u00a0documents in their specifications, and they may also choose to\u00a0deviate from\u00a0national guidance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Contractor has the responsibility for ensuring that all the materials\u00a0comply with\u00a0the specification and must supply test certificates for concrete kerbs. They are usually sourced from the manufacturer or supplier who will be testing to ensure their concrete kerbs and concrete edging\u00a0comply with\u00a0current standards and the latest SHW.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are many concrete kerbs and\u00a0kerb\u00a0edgings on the market from a host of manufacturers. They meet the functional requirements for highway works that are in widespread use on roads throughout the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Are the aesthetics of concrete kerbs covered within the Highway Works specifications?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

No, there are no aesthetic requirements within the Highway Works specifications. The specifications are\u00a0<\/span>focused<\/span>\u00a0on ensuring that key functional properties of concrete kerbs and edging kerbs are met.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However,\u00a0 this\u00a0does not\u00a0preclude\u00a0concrete kerbs that offer an enhanced visual appearance as manufacturers\u00a0ensure\u00a0that they are tested to\u00a0comply with\u00a0use on highways.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
