Leeds Public Transport Investment Programme (LPTIP) is a multi-year project that aims to dramatically improve public transport across the region.
West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Leeds City Council invested millions of pounds into a “people-first infrastructure” which makes travelling around the city easier, quicker, and greener. The project aim was to create a world-class public space and arrival gateway to the city centre for train, bus, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Tobermore supplied quality paving products to the landmark Headrow Gateway and sections of the Corn Exchange Gateway. The £20m+ scheme has strengthened the provision for sustainable transport modes in the city centre and the wider Leeds district. The Headrow has been transformed into an area that prioritises buses while offering dedicated public spaces, wider pavements and better cycle lanes so people can get around the city centre more easily.
The Headrow Gateway spans from the highway boundary on Headrow, Westgate, Vicar Lane, New Briggate, Cookridge Street, Harrison Street, Eastgate and parts of some adjacent streets. Tobermore also supplied paving to the Corn Exchange Gateway for Call Lane and Boar Lane.
Granite-look Paving was required for a large city-centre public realm scheme.
The LPTIP public realm scheme involved significant enhancements to bus, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure in Leeds City Centre.
The revamp sought to position Leeds city centre as a great place to work, live, shop and entertain.
Leeds City Council required wider pavements to enable people to get around the city more easily.
The local authority sought an attractive paving solution that could withstand significant footfall. Previously, the paving laid in Leeds City Centre chipped and cracked requiring costly maintenance and repairs.
Design considerations for the shared space included accessibility for all, product tolerances, maintenance and slip/skid risk.
Premium Braemar Paving emulates the aesthetics of natural stone.
Braemar met the aesthetic and quality expectations of the council, within budget. The contractor was delighted that Braemar was readily available in large quantities and short lead times.
Aesthetically, the granite-look of Braemar Block Paving regenerates the townscape and enhances the setting of heritage assets. The premium paving makes the centre more welcoming and attractive for visitors, residents and employees.
Braemar was the right choice for the scheme as it is manufactured and vapour cured for strength. Robust paving materials were supplied to minimise future maintenance and repairs. It was also appreciated that Tobermore can accommodate small order quantities for any planned maintenance.
Tobermore provided all necessary specification data including PSRV (Polished Slip/Skid Resistance Value) figures to the project team. PSRV figures account for a product’s slip/skid risk when polished by vehicular traffic.
Tobermore proposed complementary products to create a coherent streetscape. Braemar Block Pavers in contrasting colours were provided at 200×100 for kerb lines. The Tobermore team also solved an issue with recessed manhole covers by using 50mm Braemar.
The public realm regeneration has transformed Leeds City Centre into a World-Class Gateway to the city for bus users, pedestrians and cyclists. Connectivity for all has been enhanced, making the area safer and more inclusive.
