Tobermore’s first ever apprentice has been nominated as a Finalist in the Department of the Economy Apprenticeship Awards NI, 2023.

Luke Marks joined Tobermore as the first apprentice in June 2021 in conjunction with Southwest College. Luke is studying his Level 3 Gold Engineering apprenticeship..

The award recognises and showcases excellence and best practice in the participation and delivery of Apprenticeships.

Luke was nominated by his Manager for his significant contribution to Tobermore and his dedication to excelling in his professional development and study with South West College.

As a result of his dedication coupled with his meticulous mentality, every engineering task Luke carries out receives 100% application resulting in exemplary work and mostly Merit grades in his first year of study.

Luke’s work is enriched by his ability to contextualise his assignment tasks, calling upon experience he has gained as an integral team member at Tobermore. Luke thrives in all areas of his studies and work, showing particular flair in the area of hand fitting/ workshop processes – a passion which stemmed from his studies in year 1 of his apprenticeship.

Showing dexterity using centre-lathes, Luke successfully created a pneumatic engine for one of his practical projects. This proficiency at practical workshop activities has helped improve the quality of all work Luke has submitted as he consolidates material with his own practical experience.

Chris Devlin, from SWC commented “Luke has been an exceptional student from the outset, maintaining an excellent attendance record and usually setting the precedent of work standard in his class, inspiring his peers.”

Luke’s enthusiasm for engineering is infectious and exemplary to his peers and he is fully deserving of this award and recognition for his consistent application every day.

Trevor Smyth, Luke’s manager commented “Luke is inquisitive and will always go above and beyond in his work tasks.  We have been very pleased with Luke’s progression – he is a valued member of Tobermore and he is equipping the team for long term future success in the maintenance department.’”

Tobermore wish Luke and the other contestants the best of luck. The awards ceremony is due to take place on the 29th March 2023.
