Tactile Paving Flags
Tactile paving flags are used to assist the blind and partially sighted people at pedestrian crossings.
There are two types of crossing zones, controlled and uncontrolled. Controlled crossing zones include zebra crossings, pelican crossings, puffin crossings, toucan crossings and traffic signals with pedestrian phases. Uncontrolled crossing zones relate to side road crossings, busy crossovers, crossings away from junctions, kerb-to-kerb humps and traffic signals without a pedestrian phase.
Tactile paving flags are available in three colour finishes to enable the partially blind to distinguish between different types of crossing zones. Red relates to controlled crossing zones, while Buff is available to distinguish uncontrolled crossing zones. Natural is manufactured for the RoI market.
Different flag layout patterns are used to assist blind pedestrians identify different types of crossing zones.

Blister paving

Hazard Warning paving
This pattern of half-rod shaped bars provides warning of a hazard which requires caution e.g. at the top and bottom of a flight of stairs, at a crossroads on a shared pedestrian/cycleway, at a level crossing.
It is recommended that the surface be in contrasting colour to the surrounding area so as to assist partially sighted people.

Cycleway paving
A bar pattern which is used on a shared pedestrian/cycle route which is not segregated by different levels. It is laid in two orientations, transverse to denote pedestrian path and longitudinal to denote cycle path.
It is recommended that the surface be in contrasting colour to the surrounding area so as to assist partially sighted people.
